Switching Seasons: Mark your calendars! The prime time to switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare (or vice versa) is annually during the Open Enrollment Period from October 15th to December 7th.
Medicare gives you one window a year to change course — and one plan type that ignores the calendar entirely.
Knowing which is which, and preparing before the window opens, is most of what separates a smooth switch from a rushed one.
What You Need to Know
Switching Seasons
Moving between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare happens once a year, between October 15 and December 7. Outside that window, the choice you made stays with you.
Medigap Flexibility
Medicare Supplement works differently. A switch to Medigap can be made at any point in the year — though medical underwriting may apply depending on when you apply.
Timing Your Preparation
Underwriting questions, plan comparisons, and paperwork all take longer in December than they do in September. The review is worth starting well before the window opens.
Where We Come In
We work through the options with you — what each plan covers, what it costs across a full year, and which one fits the care you actually use.
Medicare rewards those who decide early and penalises those who decide late. A conversation in early autumn costs an hour; the same conversation in the first week of December costs considerably more in options foreclosed.
