О рынках, пенсии и капитале за рубежом — для тех, кто читает вдумчиво, а не бегло.

A boy leaves the Soviet Union because his father went to prison twice for running a business. Forty years later he runs one of his own, in a country where that is simply called work.

Gary Korolev joined Carter Wilcoxson and Tim James on the Health and Wealth podcast for a long conversation that moves from political exile to portfolio construction, and then — unexpectedly but not unreasonably — to sleep, gut health, and why stubborn body fat resists the obvious remedies.

Leaving, and What It Left Behind

4:00 — 6:11

Gary's father was imprisoned twice for the offence of running a private business. In the Soviet Union of that period this was not a technicality — enterprise was a criminal category, and the sentence was the state's answer to a man who preferred to work for himself.

The family left as political refugees. A child does not process that as ideology; he processes it as the fact that his father was taken away for doing something ordinary. What forms afterwards tends to be durable.

19:51

Asked about his own outlook, Gary describes a straightforwardly capitalist one — held not as an abstraction but as something arrived at from the other side. People who have seen enterprise punished rarely need convincing of its value.

Independence was never a preference in our household. It was the thing my father went to prison for.

Why Build Your Own Firm

36:13 — 39:17

Launching a Registered Investment Advisory is not a light undertaking. Gary walks through what it actually involves — the registration, the compliance architecture, the operational weight that arrives before a single client does.

The reason for doing it anyway is the part worth hearing.

24:50 — 25:47

Room to Move

A large institution answers to a compliance framework built for scale. That framework rules out strategies which are entirely sound but do not fit the template — and the client never learns they existed.

34:25 — 36:00

Digital Assets

Managed crypto strategies are the clearest example. Most firms cannot offer them under existing regulation — Sovereign built the licensing to do so properly rather than leaving the category to the client's own devices.

The through-line from the first half of the conversation to the second is not subtle: a man raised on the cost of not being allowed to run your own affairs eventually declines to run someone else's.

The Other Half of the Balance Sheet

41:20 — 58:15 Midway through, the roles reverse. Gary puts a question to Tim James — why does the last stretch of body fat resist everything that worked on the rest of it? Tim's answer covers three areas, none of which is calorie arithmetic.

48:47 — 50:00

Circadian Rhythm

Sleep quality governs the hormonal environment in which fat is either mobilised or stored. Sleep hygiene, in this framing, is not rest — it is metabolic infrastructure.

44:34 — 45:56

Candida Testing

Yeast overgrowth in the gut is proposed as a driver of sugar cravings — the argument being that the appetite belongs to the organism, not to the willpower fighting it.

56:03 — 57:42

Structured Water

Tim's contention is that how water is structured affects cellular uptake — hydration measured by absorption rather than by volume consumed.

A NOTE ON THIS SECTION

The health discussion reflects Tim James's views as a guest on the programme. It is offered as conversation rather than clinical guidance, and the evidence base for these approaches varies considerably. Speak to a physician before acting on any of it.

Why the Two Halves Belong Together

A podcast that pairs wealth with health sounds like an editorial convenience until you have spent time with clients in their seventies. Then it becomes obvious that the two accounts are drawn on together, and that a plan which funds thirty years of retirement is worth rather less to someone who cannot enjoy them.

The full episode runs about an hour. The first half will interest anyone curious about how a firm gets built; the second, anyone who has done everything correctly and watched the scale refuse to move.

Views expressed by the hosts and other guests are their own. Nothing in this episode constitutes financial advice, a recommendation of any security or strategy, or medical advice of any kind. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal.

INDEPENDENT ADVICE

The Advantage of Being Small

Being an independent RIA means we can build around a household rather than around a product shelf — including in areas most firms are structurally unable to enter. If that's the conversation you've been wanting, we're here for it.
